Tip of the Day

Wrap a long, lightweight, solid-color scarf around your waist and knot it loosely just in front of one hip bone. The dangling ends will make you look longer and leaner. More Tips >

New York Fashion Week Makeup Forecast

Gift-set palettes and what will be next fall’s and winter’s makeup favorites are being decided right now! A long-limbed model is walking 100 feet down a New York runway painted in shades that will be front and center in your department store a few months from today. It’s the barometer of future chic -- it’s fall Fashion Week.

Based on the recent shows, fall makeup ideas look surprisingly warm. Smoky eyes in unexpected warm, earthy tones were a major player. The shades were softer and easier than the traditional dark-black or -brown smoky eye. There were soft earth shades and warm reddish browns with a hint of burgundy. Shimmer and sparkle were almost a complete no-show at this fashion fiesta; matte texture on eyes ruled the week.

Lips also had a warmer tone to them. Instead of pale shades, berries came out ahead.  Replacing the classic holiday reds, soft plum stains were on everyone’s kisser. Even the nudes were in complementary earthy shades instead of contrasting peach or pink tones.  And like eyes, lips flaunted textures that were luxe: Creams and satin finishes or stains took over for gossamer glosses.

Cheeks were barely there, brushed with a subtle bronze contour or a soft terra-cotta flush. Pinks were absent, but the tiniest hint of a wind-chapped berry was occasionally on display.

There was news in nails too. Strong reds took a backseat to restrained shades of beige. The statement-making hue was a simple, pure dark brown.

The runway, in both fashion and makeup, was taking its color inspiration straight from the outdoors. But while the hues may be soft, warm and earthy, the impact is surprisingly sexy and strong.
