Is it March already? My, how time flies. It has been a pretty mild start to the 2012 year, and you know what? I’m not complaining. We’ve experienced some double-digit temperatures as of late, and all I can think about is spring.

We all know that spring (and the onset of longer days) brightens everyone’s outlook on life and encourages us to start fresh. What better way to freshen up than to welcome in a brand-new makeup routine? Here are three makeup trends to try.

1. Healthy skin. Fresh faces are making a comeback! Do away with heavy powders and thick foundations and opt for a tinted moisturizer or lightweight liquid foundation instead. Add in a neutral pink cream color to the cheeks and lips, and finish with mascara for a polished, almost-bare look. The trick: Keep your layers super-sheer and only add more coverage to problematic areas. And keep your setting powder hand light!

2. Ultra-blush. During the fall, we saw plenty of exaggerated blush in brighter, pinkier strokes. Noticeable and defined blush is still hot for spring 2012, but instead of your typical candy pinks and roses, choose burnished tawny shades and sun-kissed peaches. Use bronzer to contour (instead of a darker foundation), and apply a nude shimmer to the eyelids to complement.

3. Easter eyes. Pastels are often saved for Easter eggs, but this season, let’s bring color back into the fold by using pastel shades over the eyes. The key to mastering this look is to apply a soft wash of your favorite (and flattering) pastel over the eye. Keep the color well-blended over the lid and diffused, leaving out heavy liner. Pair this trick with a bare face. (See above.) Colors to try: lavender, soft green and yellow.
