Tip of the Day

Wrap a long, lightweight, solid-color scarf around your waist and knot it loosely just in front of one hip bone. The dangling ends will make you look longer and leaner. More Tips >

What is it about the autumn months that makes us feel like we need to change our appearance? Is it the back-to-school mentality? We tend to get fresh new haircuts and styles, including color. Sun-kissed blondes go warmer; brunettes get richer; redheads get redder! I’m going to chalk it up to the fact that we get inspired from the scenery around us. With all the beautiful colors we see during the fall, it’s easy to take your cue from the trees and leaves around you. Plus, as the season turns to the pale grays and whites of winter, it’s nice to have some color somewhere, so why not add it to your hair?

If You’re a Blonde
Are you looking to warm up your almost-sunny blond locks? Unleash your inner fiery self by adding a little bit of red into the mix. You don’t need to turn yourself into the next Emma Stone, but why not try an auburn, copper or strawberry blond? A subtle change with a soft hint of red will be an easier transition than a darker red or a siren red like Rihanna’s. If red is too much for you, jump on the ombre trend. Transition your blond to darker locks by bringing in shades like caramel, honey and toffee.

If You’re a Brunette
Consider adding some dimension to your hair by mixing it up with streaks or highlights. Although chunky and choppy aren’t the best words to describe a great streaking job, having them placed under the hair is a great look. For something subtler, opt for a piecey, more natural highlighted look. Don’t go more than two or three levels lighter than your base and keep it simple.

If You’re a Redhead
Losing some of your fire? Stoke the flames by punching up your color with a mix of copper, auburn and sun-kissed blond highlights. Keep it subtle and soft so that your true red has a chance to shine through. If you want to take the full leap and embrace it, then go full-on red: Think Rihanna and Christina Hendricks. Just keep your skin tone in mind, and red can surely work for you.
