Tip of the Day

Wrap a long, lightweight, solid-color scarf around your waist and knot it loosely just in front of one hip bone. The dangling ends will make you look longer and leaner. More Tips >

Summer Hair Trends to Try Now

Natasha Sunshine founder of Byu-ti Hair Therapy salon in Santa Monica, Calif., has run her fingers through some notable manes, including those of Ivanka Trump, Molly Sims and Eva Herzigova.

The ’70s are back, and they’re sticking around a little longer than we might have predicted. As always, hair follows fashion, and with the runways spinning out lots of boho chic and hippie-inspired looks, we’re seeing the new summer hair trends mimick the free-spirited decade.

From choppy bobs (Scarlett Johansson) to long, shaggy layers (Vanessa Hudgens) and even feather extensions, we’ll be enjoying the free-love look until next fall, at least. Johansson’s uncontrived cut is making its way to hair salons much to the delight of many top stylists. “It’s so great that our clients are asking for that instead of just another head of long layers. Thank you, Scarlett!” says Sura at Byu-ti Salon.

Even long hair has a new feel with shaggy layers instead of the same old blended ones. A standout celebrity hair trend example: Vanessa Hudgens’ sexy bohemian layers.

And can we talk about these feathers? Salons are scrambling to get these little buggers, and time is running out, as supply is very limited these days. But ask around or stop someone on the street and see where she got hers. This trend will likely turn out be a short-lived one, but for the moment, feather extensions are hotter than ever, and you can get them for under the $50 mark. As for maintenance and install, they take about five minutes to put in and you’ll have to get a touchup about every six weeks. Perfect, because you might even be over them by then.

To sum up the hair trends for summer 2011, keep it free-spirited and flowing. You might even want to stick a flower behind your ear if the impulse moves you. The retro free-loving ’70s are here just in time for enjoying concerts in the park, kicking back and maybe even taking a drive on the wild side.
