Do-it-yourself Sunburn Remedies

It happens to the best of us: We’re madly scrambling to get out the door and forget to apply SPF 30. Or we remember to protect our arms but overlook our shoulders. Whatever the reason you find yourself with skin that’s seen too much sun, these DIY remedies will have your tender, sunburned skin feeling comfy in a flash.

Aloe

When used straight from the plant, or in juice or ointment form, aloe vera is a whiz at reducing pain and inflammation while heading off unsightly peeling. If you’re a sun worshipper who never seems to learn her lesson, consider investing in an aloe plant.

Oatmeal baths

Tepid baths are a great relief when you’re feeling the heat of a burn, and adding oatmeal is particularly effective in helping to draw out heat and soothe skin. Added bonus: It’s a great natural exfoliator, so kill two beauty birds with one stone by sloughing unburned areas with the grains while you soak.

Milk
Your favorite white beverage can pull double duty as both a calcium champion and a skin-soothing superstar. Soak a washcloth in milk and apply it to the burned skin like a compress for about 20 minutes a pop. Repeat every two to four hours. Just be sure that if you’re a skim girl, you spring for some whole milk: The fat content in milk is the brains behind the beauty in this operation.

Apple cider vinegar

If you’ve overdone it to the point of blistering and peeling, apple cider vinegar may be your best bet. Apply vinegar to a cotton ball and smooth over the affected skin, or make a compress if you’re dealing with a large area.

The Perfect Face for Special Events

The Perfect Face for Special Events
Celebrity makeup artist Tasha Reiko Brown helps get young Hollywood radiant for photo shoots and countless red carpet events, including the Oscars, Emmys and Golden Globes.

Circled days in your calendar are typically the special events you buy that new dress for and plan what shoes you’ll wear a week in advance. You may not be on the red carpet, but you'll have enough pics taken of you to fill an entire Facebook album. You’ll need a fresh face that will last the whole night and won't ever look dated in photos.

A well-put-together look takes planning. Use those gossip magazines you pore over at the nail salon to get some ideas. Narrow your looks down to one image as the big day draws near; you don't want to make the mistake of trying out looks at the last minute. If you apply and reapply makeup, your final application won't look nearly as fresh.

Prep and prime your skin as usual. If possible, skip a separate heavy moisturizer; some of the ingredients, even under makeup, can give you “ghost face” when a flashbulb goes off. Don’t try new skin care products in the days before the big event, to avoid the possibility of an irritation. Tweeze or wax a few days earlier to give any redness or puffiness time to subside.

If you’re unsure whether to choose your summer or winter foundation, pick the one closest to the current shade of your skin. When in doubt, go a smidge darker; this too will help avoid the dreaded ghost face. And if there were ever a time to break out those false lashes, now is it. Enlist a friend or salon to help --drama demands lashes!

To keep your face flawless all night long, don’t be afraid to air-kiss and high-five in lieu of hugging. Your album will be all the better for it.

Top 4 Celebrity Hair Transformations

Top 4 Celebrity Hair Transformations
Alison Bills is the editor in chief of SheKnows.com and its family of women-centric sites.

While we don’t necessarily recommend digging up your old photos and making a trip down embarrassing hairstyle lane, take a look at how these celebs have transformed their style.

Julia Roberts
With a successful Hollywood career spanning more than three decades and a rare untarnished celebrity reputation, it’s hard not to adore America’s sweetheart. With the exception of her questionable taste in men over the years, we have to give it up to Julia for always making great choices, particularly when it comes to her style. She keeps it classy, simple and under control -- a lot like her life. Rules to live by, gals!

Lady Gaga
Whether she’s accessorizing with Pepsi cans and mosquito netting, twisting her locks up into a bow tie or rocking a sassy short look, Lady Gaga has our attention, and we can’t wait to see what she comes up with next. Edgy and resourceful, she’s in every gossip column under the sun thanks to her trend-busting style. Check out even more of her fabulous hairstyles here

Katherine Heigl
She’s been a blonde, a brunette and a redhead, and we hope that Katherine Heigl never makes up her mind. Whether it’s one of her retro styles or her classic girl-next-door looks, we can try these out on our own with the help of an anti-frizz cream to tame those wild curls and a shine polish to finish it off!

Rihanna
We don’t know how she does it, but somehow Rihanna pulls off that Skunky Brewster look. Her don’t-try-this-at-home hairstyles over the years have gone from long to short and blue to pink to purple and back again, but she’s always polished and true to her own style.

Fashion Week Nail Trends

Fashion Week Nail Trends
Amber Katz is the editor of Beauty Blogging Junkie, a hilarious pop culture-infused beauty blog that covers everything from eye shadow to hair spray to figure slimmers.

While some beauty statements are best left on the runway (mile-high crimped updos and florescent brows come to mind), replicating Fashion Week nail looks is the easiest and most cost-effective way to be on trend. Here, we examine some catwalk-inspired ways to decorate your digits.

Metallic Mania

Metallic nails are sexy in a futuristic way that borders on sci-fi. Want to Judy Jetson up your nails like the models did for the Baby Phat Spring/Summer 2010 collection? Last year’s Minx manicures -- the metallic-colored, in-salon nail wraps -- are one way to achieve this look, but the service ranges from $30 to $55 per application. The solution? Drugstore nail polishes with the words chrome and foil in the names. These can yield a molten-metal effect.

Mannequin Nails

Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors are just two of the designers who opted for nude nails at their Spring/Summer 2010 fashion shows. Nude nail polish, in both sheer and opaque incarnations, has ousted light pink from its reign of ubiquity. To make your nails look longer and add a ladylike vibe, simply find the flesh-tone shade that best matches your skin.

Moon Manis

Half-moon manicures began with fashion designer Ruffian. For Spring/Summer 2009, the brand boasted a pointed pink and black iteration, then a maroon half-moon manicure for Fall 2009, and finally created a very wearable metallic gold/matte navy half-moon version for Fall 2010. To achieve this effect yourself, paint a coat of gold polish, let it dry and follow with a navy matte shade, leaving a small half-moon of the gold showing at the base of the nail bed.

Whimsical White

At both the Twinkle and L.A.M.B. Spring/Summer 2010 shows, it was all about the brilliant, snow-white tips. A white manicure looks very mod in a ’60s throwback manner but is best implemented on squoval (that’s square/oval) short nails for a decidedly modern feel.
