Tip of the Day

Wrap a long, lightweight, solid-color scarf around your waist and knot it loosely just in front of one hip bone. The dangling ends will make you look longer and leaner. More Tips >

The leaves aren’t the only things that are turning orange this fall: According to the recent runway shows, autumn’s palette will be full of all things colored rust, orange and burnt sienna. Although it’ll be refreshing and downright exciting to see the ol’ holiday party standby of blue-red take a turn for the tangerine, some colors in this crayon box can be scary and downright off-putting. Can oranges work for you? Of course they can! The trick is figuring out the perfect shade.

The fresh-from-the-slopes flush has gone a little orangey. To keep it more fashion than failure, go with a sheer texture and skip the added shimmer. For fair skin, a soft orange-peach is best. For darker skin tones, a straight, pure deep orange is lovely. If you keep it sheer and apply lightly with a natural-bristle brush, you’ll avoid an overdose of color.

For lips, while others reach to the back of the drawer for that holiday-only blue-red lipstick, you can reach for something new! Lively orange-red lipsticks are perfect for fair-skinned girls, while deeper-hued ladies should go for an amazing burnt sienna. For day, be even more seasonally savvy and try a gloss. Lovely salmon-hued shades are a perfect match to brighten up a deeper fall wardrobe palette.

The overall key to staying embarrassment-free is to not take the trend too literally. Try things in the orange family. Keep the word “orange-ish” in mind when shopping, and your fall look will be as appealing as a sunset!
