It’s time to refresh your makeup bag for fall! If you want some tips on what to include, look no further than the recent Emmy awards.

1. Kick things up with color.
This was the most colorful red carpet we’ve seen in a long time. Heidi Klum, Nicole Kidman and Sofia Vergara wore oceanic hues. Julianne Moore, Julie Bowen and Claire Danes were sunny and stunning in yellow. Ginnifer Goodwin and Padma Lakshmi were knockouts in orange.

To complement these Crayola colors, we saw lots of flushed cheeks and bright lips. If your own makeup palette plays it safe with neutrals, you’ll want to spice it up with some color. Try a raspberry, ruby or poppy lipstick in a satin finish. “These fruit punch hues are a perfect way to brighten things up in the fall and winter,” says Hollywood makeup artist and Style Glossy contributor Tasha Reiko Brown.

2. Pick a blush that will recapture the rosy glow of your cheeks after a snowball fight.
“I like to use a juicy color that really looks like the skin,” says makeup artist Brett Freedman, whose clients include Catherine Zeta-Jones, Amy Poehler and Stacy Keibler. The trick to keeping high-impact blush natural is to use a very light touch. Check out your drugstore shelves for mousse and whipped formulations that blend seamlessly into your skin.

3. Balance your bright lips and cheeks with a subdued eye.
Forget smoky, and go for clean and elegant. Apply a sheer wash of color to your lids, and then define your eyes with a precise stripe of liner along your upper and lower lashes. The final step never goes out of style: two coats of your favorite black mascara.

This soft and feminine makeup goes beautifully with a soft hairdo. Some of the best hair looks from the Emmys: Zooey Deschanel’s retro updo, Kat Dennings’ bohemian waves and hair necklace, and the sweet milkmaid braid sported by Lindsay Pulsipher of True Blood.
